Close to
the Edge B/W Rocket Man/Meryl Streep from Nick Awde and Desert Hearts is an EP
that mixes elements of straight-ahead rock with prog and punk. Clocking in at
15 minutes, 'Close to the Edge' is possibly the first genuine reinterpretation
of Yes's milestone prog rock epic, and it gets further reinterpreted in the lush
closer 'Close to the Edge (Reprise)'. Elton John's 'Rocket Man' also gets a revamp
complete with crashing chords and a soaring chorus, followed by the taut rocker
'Meryl Streep' that trades killer guitar and sax riffs. Musicians include
Fred James Hill and Knox of the punk rock group The Vibrators on guitars, New
York singer-songwriter Dean Friedman (of hit Lucky Stars fame) on piano and vocals,
ex-Camel drummer Andy Ward, ex-Wizzard saxophonist Nick Pentelow and multi-instrumentalist
Lyndon Connah (Level 42, 64 Spoons). Probably the first CD to feature the new
Mellotron M4000 on each track. Track listing: 1. Close to the Edge
(15:04) 2. Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time) (4:13)
3. Meryl Streep (4:12) 4. Close to the Edge (Reprise) (2:06)
